MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - OAKLAND , Calif. – The Oakland A’s today selected left-handed pitcher Gio Gonzalez from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned infielder Gregorio Petit to Sacramento. To clear a spot for Gonzalez on the 40-man roster, the A’s transferred Eric Chavez to the 60-day disabled list.
Gonzalez is scheduled to make his Major League debut for the A’s tonight with a start at Toronto. He was 8-7 with a 4.24 ERA in 23 games, 22 starts, at Sacramento this year, including 5-1 with a 1.74 ERA over his final seven starts. The 22-year old left-hander ranks second in the Pacific Coast League and tied for 14th in all of minor league baseball with 128 strikeouts. Gonzalez was acquired from the Chicago White Sox on January 3, 2008 in the Nick Swisher trade and was named the A’s number two prospect by Baseball America prior to the season. He is 39-35 with a 3.64 ERA in 114 career minor league appearances, including 111 starts, over five professional seasons. He has 705 strikeouts in 615.1 innings.
Petit was recalled from Sacramento on August 1 for his third stint with the A’s this year but did not have an at bat in two games. He is batting .348 in 14 games with the A’s and .285 with no home runs and 25 RBI in 58 games with the River Cats.
Chavez was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 2 with a right shoulder inflammation and is scheduled to undergo season ending surgery on the shoulder next week.
